Novell Announces Additional Service for Macintosh Users
200-user Version Leads List of Enhancements for Novell Macintosh Support
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--February 4, 1992--Novell, Inc., developer of NetWare
systems software, today announced a 200-user version of NetWare for Macintosh
that leads a list of enhanced solutions for the Apple Macintosh personal
computer user. NetWare for Macintosh now provides support for up to 200
Macintosh users on a NetWare network, and supports SNMP, the industry standard
for network management. Through a new upgrade program, users can increase the
number of Macintosh computers supported on their networks at special customer
prices. Novell will distribute, free of charge, the software component that
activates the SNMP network management feature in earlier versions of NetWare
for Macintosh.
"We're making it easier for our customers to grow their networks," said Steve
Nelson, Novell director of product marketing. "By increasing the number of
Macintosh users that NetWare supports, and by providing industry standard
management capabilities, this series of enhancements reflects Novell's
commitment to the Macintosh user."
Support for 200-Users
Novell has enhanced NetWare for Macintosh so that it is now available in three
configurations: 20 users, 100 users, and 200 users. With the addition of the
200-user version of NetWare for Macintosh, Novell provides a greater user
stratification, offering both entry-level and two high-end solutions for the
NetWare user.
Support for SNMP
The AppleTalk router included with the 200-user version of NetWare for
Macintosh supports the AppleTalk MIB I specification for SNMP. Developers who
have SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) consoles that support these
specifications now can view AppleTalk data within the router. This control of
their computer network gives administrators the ability to obtain information
on the status of an AppleTalk network.
Beginning in March 1992, Novell will distribute, free of charge, an enhanced
AppleTalk protocol stack that enables SNMP consoles to monitor AppleTalk
routing within NetWare for Macintosh. This software component, designed for
the 20- and 100-user versions of the product, will be available through
various on-line forums.
Upgrade Program
Novell will begin shipping the 200-user version of NetWare for Macintosh in
March 1992. In the United States and Canada, the suggested retail price of
the 200-user version is U.S. $2,995.00. With the start of a new upgrade
program, however, NetWare for Macintosh v3.x customers can upgrade their level
of Macintosh support at special customer rates.
Users of 20-user NetWare for Macintosh may upgrade to the 100-user version for
U.S. $1,770, and to the 200-user version for U.S.$2,770. NetWare for
Macintosh 100-user customers can upgrade to 200-user support for U.S. $2,496.
For more information, customers should contact their Novell Authorized
Reseller, or call Novell at 1-800-NETWARE.
Support for DAL
In a related announcement, Novell will unveil support for Apple Computer's
Data Access Language (DAL). DAL is an SQL-based data manipulation language
that enables Macintosh users to access data that is stored on a mainframe or
mini computer, or on the network server, from within Macintosh applications.
When used in conjunction with NetWare SQL, NetWare for Macintosh will provide
support for DAL.
"As the Macintosh continues its growth in all segments of the market, Novell
is responding to the needs of Apple's customers by providing the products and
services that integrate the Macintosh into diverse corporate environments,"
said Keith Fox, vice president of business markets for Apple Computer.
With DAL for NetWare SQL, many off-the-shelf query and spreadsheet
applications for the Macintosh, such as Data Prism, Microsoft Excel and Lotus
1-2-3, can immediately access NetWare SQL and Btrieve data.
Novell will support DAL connections to the Macintosh in the next release of
NetWare SQL.
Extending Macintosh Networking
Two recently announced products from Novell extend the boundaries of Macintosh
networking. NetWare Runtime v3.11 is an OEM version of NetWare v3.11 that
gives developers access to the AppleTalk protocol stack and router, enabling
developers to write cross-platform applications.
The NetWare Multi-Protocol Router v1.0 provides customers with a low-cost,
standalone router solution that includes the AppleTalk router. The
Multi-Protocol Router provides high performance routing of AppleTalk packets
across a Novell network.
Both of these Novell products enable customers to integrate the Macintosh into
their evolving networks, while preserving the existing hardware and software
investment.
Pricing and Availability
Novell will begin shipping the 200-user version of NetWare for Macintosh in
March 1992. In the United States and Canada, the suggested retail price of
the 200-user version is U.S. $2,995.00.
